Morning: Transfer to Bugesera – Visit Ntarama Genocide Memorial Site
Your tour begins in the morning with a pick-up from your hotel or residence in Kigali. After a short briefing, you’ll embark on a scenic drive to Bugesera District, located about an hour south of the city. The journey takes you through peaceful countryside landscapes — a stark contrast to the tragic history that once unfolded there.

Your first stop is the Ntarama Genocide Memorial Site, a former Catholic church where approximately 5,000 people were massacred on August 15, 1994. The church has been preserved as a place of remembrance, with human remains, clothing, and personal belongings of the victims displayed as powerful reminders of the events that took place. The silence and stillness of the site speak volumes, inviting reflection and respect. As you walk through the church and surrounding grounds, your guide will share the heartbreaking stories of those who sought refuge here, helping you grasp the scale of the tragedy and the strength of Rwanda’s recovery.

Midday: Continue to Nyamata Genocide Memorial Site
After your visit to Ntarama, continue to the Nyamata Genocide Memorial Site, located about 10 kilometers away. Nyamata, situated in the Bugesera region approximately 35 kilometers from Kigali, is one of the most significant memorials in Rwanda. The site stands as a haunting reminder of the more than 10,000 men, women, and children who were brutally murdered inside and around the church compound on April 10, 1994.

When the genocide began, terrified residents of the region gathered in the church seeking safety behind locked iron doors. Tragically, the killers broke in using grenades and machetes, leaving unimaginable devastation. Today, the church remains as it was found — the pews, walls, and altar all bearing witness to the events of that day. Beneath the church lies a mass grave and underground crypts where thousands are laid to rest. The site offers visitors a deeply emotional yet essential experience, one that encourages reflection on the consequences of hate and the enduring power of remembrance.
